July 09, 2010 Local 700 Member Dies on Job After working for the Illinois Department of Transportation for nearly 30 years, Clifton Jones, 68, recently passed away on the job of a heart attack. His death left fellow Teamsters remembering their friend and colleague. Jones, a resident of Blue Island, was a Vietnam veteran, an ordained deacon, a singer, a husband, a grandfather, a friend and a Teamster who, as his friends said, was "strong as a bull." "We didn't just lose a man - he was a workforce of ten men. He was a hard worker, most guys don't work like him," said Ray Devon, a fellow Teamster at IDOT with him. "He'd stay with you on the job until it was done. " "He was a real good man," Devon said. "He was kind-hearted and would give you anything off of his back. He helped everybody - his neighbors, his family, his church friends, his kids, his grandchildren. There isn't anyone he wouldn't help. He'd even give a dollar to people on the Tollway who needed it." John McGee, another colleague and close friend agreed and added that he was a role model. "He was a spiritual inspiration," said McGee, who had Jones perform a solo at both his brother's and mother's funerals. "He always kept a positive attitude. He was a morally straight man." "He strived to correct things which were wrong," McGee said. "He stuck up for people who couldn't speak up for themselves." Even though he's gone, "the lasting memories will be there, he will definitely be missed," McGee said. Services will be held for Clifton Jones on Tuesday, July 6 from 2:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Cage Funeral Chapels, 7651 S. Jeffery Blvd. , Chicago. A funeral will follow on Wednesday, July 7 at 11:00 a.m. at Mt. Calvery Baptist Church, 1259 W. 111th St., Chicago.
