July 14, 2010 City of Markham Owes $500,000 in Backpay to Local 700 Police Officers In 2005, Markham Police Officers and Sergeants - who had been on the force for five years or more - were awarded nearly $500,000 in backpay after Local 700 took the City of Markham to arbitration over a dispute of wages in an employee contract. The Officers also were awarded 12 percent interest on the backpay, which has compounded over the past several years. Currently, Local 700 has filed to get a court order with the Circuit Court of Cook County to enforce the award from the arbitrator. William P. Logan, Assistant Trustee for Local 700 said the Local Union is here to support its employees. "We are fighting for our members in an effort to protect them and get them what an arbitrator, who is impartial to the situation, has decided time and time again is long overdue and properly owed to them." Barb Cornett, a Local 700 Business Agent who represents the officers, agreed. "These are hard working folks who deserve to do their job and receive fair treatment and accurate wages," she said. The City of Markham is on the verge of receiving two state bonds, both of which are worth over one million dollars. One bond is to be used for a senior citizen's center and the other one can be used as the City of Markham sees fit. Many of the union-represented Markham Police Officers have been put in an unfavorable light with the Markham Police administration, Cornett said. "They're determined to get rid of the thorn in its side – those Police Officers with Local 700 – and we're not going to let that happen," she said. |
