July 27, 2010 Local 700 Demands a Look at the Shortage of Cook County Court Service Deputies Local 700 filed a union grievance on July 7, 2010 asking that Cook County recognize its shortage of Court Service Deputies. Many courtrooms have deputies watching more than one courtroom at a time. "It just isn't safe that a court service deputy could be assigned to four courtrooms at any one moment," said William P. Logan, Assistant Trustee for Local 700. "They're not only watching the courtroom, they're watching the holding area too," Logan said. "This is putting citizens and our members at a higher risk of danger." Becky Strzechowski, Assistant Trustee for Local 700, agreed. "There are more than 350 courtrooms in Cook County and officials know courtrooms are short manpower, about 250 deputies short," said Strzechowski. "Unless the county recognizes that it's putting its workers and citizens in harm's way every day, more officers will be injured in our courts."
