July 30, 2010 With Negotiations at Standstill, Local 700 Goes to Mediation As a result of the negotiations being at a standstill for Social Service Case Workers, Teamsters Local 700 and the chief judge have jointly agreed to schedule a mediation for Aug. 31, 2010. After a year of negotiations, the chief judge continues to refuse to compromise on non-economic issues beyond the current contract language. Local 700 believes that it is necessary to insert new language into the contract to better protect members during bidding processes, pre-disciplinary and investigatory meetings. With the chief judge's unwillingness to negotiate such terms, the Teamsters must move beyond the impasse and get issues settled. "We've been at this for a year and we're sick and tired of being stonewalled by the chief judge. Our case workers should be given the opportunity to improve the language in their contracts to more adequately protect them," said William P. Logan, Assistant Trustee for Local 700. "We need to get the ball rolling toward a decision, which takes into account our case workers' needs and rights," said Logan. This comes after the Local Union declared an impasse on future movement in May 2010. All members will be kept informed of any and all changes. "I think the only way we're going to achieve our goals is if we get a mediator involved," Logan said. "We need to resolve our outstanding issues in a way which better serves our case workers." |
