Aug. 9, 2010 Economic Issues Prolong Concessions Earlier this year, the Village of Summit asked Local 700 for concessions due to its troubled economic state. The Local Union agreed to have its clerical workers take one furlough day per month and its dispatchers receive less holiday time. The agreement was contingent on the fact that the Village would meet with the Local Union during the summer to re-evaluate its financial situation. After reviewing their economic state, the Village's financial picture has not changed. However, the Village is not asking for any additional concessions. "At this point and time, we feel this move preserves the integrity of our members' contracts as well as takes the economic climate into consideration," said Becky Strzechowski, Assistant Trustee for Local 700. "Our hope is that Summit's economy will improve by the beginning of next year so that we can take a step in a more favorable direction for our members." William P. Logan, Assistant Trustee for Local 700 agreed. "Right now, concessions are commonplace across the state," Logan said. "Just recently, Local 700 and State of Illinois officials signed off on a memorandum of agreement for employees to continue to take 12 voluntary furlough days." "But in comparison to non-union state employees, who are being forced to take 24 furlough days, it shows that being in our Local Union does protect you even during tough times." |
