Nov. 30, 2010 Local 700 filed unfair labor practice charges with the Illinois Labor Relations Board on Nov. 3, 2010, after City officials said they would begin assigning to ward superintendents snow removal tasks, which is bargaining unit work. The failure to negotiate this transfer of work also is contrary to employee rights under state labor laws. "We want this issue resolved before even one member sees his or her job duties infringed upon or taken away," said William P. Logan, Local 700 Assistant Trustee. Local 700 representatives met with Tom Byrne, commissioner of the Department of Streets and Sanitation, to discuss ward superintendents being assigned bargaining unit work, but Byrne said he would not negotiate with the union over the matter. "Their refusal to negotiate with the union is a clear violation of the Illinois Public Labor Relations Act," said Becky Strzechowski, Local 700 Assistant Trustee. "We do not take these matters lightly." |
