Dec. 21, 2010 The City of Markham paid Sgt. Lynette Freeman more than $10,000 in back pay and posted notices acknowledging their wrongdoing as part of a settlement agreement over unfair labor practice charges filed by Teamsters Local 700. The ULPs stemmed from an incident where Local 700 members were interrogated by Markham officials after a union meeting on May 26, 2010, and from the City's failure to provide health plan documents to members. "When our members are being treated unjustly or their rights are being violated, we do not take it lightly," said John T. Coli, Trustee of Local 700. As part of the settlement agreement, which was reached on Dec. 17, the City must post two notices for 90 days. Both notices list employee rights under the Illinois Public Labor Relations Act. The first notice states that the City will cease and desist from interfering and restraining employees in the exercise of their rights guaranteed in the Act; will not threaten or intimidate members participating in union meetings; and will cease and desist from threatening to retaliate against members for making statements at union meetings. The second notice states that the City will always provide insurance plan information to members who request it. "These notices force the City to own up to their misconduct while assuring it will never happen again," said William P. Logan, Local 700 Assistant Trustee. "And if it does, we'll be right there to set the City straight and protect our members." |
