Dec. 21, 2010 Teamster police officers are expected to collect $528,000 in back pay after a Cook County Circuit Court judge denied an attempt by the City of Markham to overturn the arbitration award. The back pay has been owed to 32 members of Teamsters Local 700 since Dec. 22, 2009, when the arbitrator's decision was passed down. Local 700 then filed a court order to enforce the award, and the judge ruled in favor of the Teamsters to uphold the order on Dec. 17, 2010. "The City's arguments, as they have been all along, were without merit," said Becky Strzechowski, Local 700 Assistant Trustee. "The union has been fighting this issue for years, and every objection the City threw up was shot down by the courts. And now our members will finally get what it is owed to them." Markham police officers and sergeants who had been on the force for five years or more were originally awarded the substantial back pay and interest after Local 700 took the City to arbitration over a contract wage dispute from 2004. An order issued on July 22, 2010, requiring the City to keep and preserve $528,000 from state-issued bond money, also remains in effect. "It's been a long, arduous process, but our members remained patient and put their faith in us to fight for them," said William P. Logan, Local 700 Assistant Trustee. |
