Jan. 13, 2011 The Illinois Labor Relations Board issued a complaint on December 6, 2010 regarding the unfair labor practice charge filed by Local 700 in September 2010 on behalf of the members working for the Cook County Department of Corrections who have been discriminated against for lateral transfers. The hearing on this matter will begin on June 8, 2011. "The fact that the ILRB will hear our complaint validates what we have been fighting for since last May," said Becky Strzechowski, Local 700 Assistant Trustee. In May 2010, the Sheriff implemented a new rule requiring correctional officers to have at least 40 percent of their sick days unused in order to be eligible for a lateral transfer. Court service deputies must also abide by the "40 percent rule" to be eligible for a promotion to the rank of Sergeant. "This unilateral change of the terms of transfer has not only directly affected at least 14 correctional officers, it threatens the livelihood of hundreds of other members," said William P. Logan, Local 700 Assistant Trustee. "The real thorn in the side is the unwillingness of the Sheriff's Department to bargain in good faith over this matter." "Our members have worked long and hard to earn the benefits they have today. We're not about to let anyone step in and prevent them from using those benefits," said John T. Coli, Local 700 Trustee. Teamsters Local 700 represents more than 13,000 public employees in Illinois, including more than 6,000 workers in Cook County.
