Aviation Workers Have Hours Cut by 75 Percent; Grievance Moves to Arbitration

City of Chicago Department of Aviation workers at O'Hare and Midway Airports, who are in charge of removing snow and maintaining equipment, among other things, have seen a drastic decrease in the number of hours worked each day. Local 700 will take the case to arbitration on Monday, Feb. 14.

"These are full-time workers who are being sent home after two hours," said John T. Coli, Local 700 Trustee. "Budget crisis or not, the City cannot just violate the contract and make our members less than part-time workers."

The past practice of 8-hour workdays was unilaterally changed based on shift seniority, not city-wide seniority.

"The contract clearly states that seniority will be determined on a city-wide basis," said William P. Logan, Local 700 Assistant Trustee. "We hope to see this change reversed and our members made whole."
