Local 700 Wins Grievance, City of Chicago Bureau of Rodent Control Must Post Overtime Lists
As of November, the Streets and Sanitation Bureau of Rodent Control began posting an overtime list so members can better monitor who is receiving overtime and who is not.
The first signs of change came when Local 700 member Steve Kasprowicz filed a grievance in September 2010 because he was bypassed for overtime. Upon closer inspection, the overtime problem was more widespread.
"This practice of overlooking senior members for overtime was common at Rodent Control," said John T. Coli, Local 700 Trustee. "When the union reaches an agreement on a contract, we expect the City to abide by it, and that's what was carried out."
Kasprowicz will receive a settlement for being bypassed for the overtime.
"This case serves as an example that when one member speaks up about a problem, it can make big, positive changes for many members," said William P. Logan, Local 700 Assistant Trustee.
