Feb. 16, 2011 Phil Sherlock, Local 700 member and candidate for 19th Ward Alderman, addresses members of Joint Council 25 at the December 2010 Delegates Meeting. While Local 700 has endorsed member Phil Sherlock for 19th Ward Alderman for quite some time, the final push before the Chicago municipal election is just around the corner. Sherlock has also been endorsed by Joint Council 25 and Teamster Locals 727 and 786. Sherlock, who grew up in West Lawn and currently resides with his family in Morgan Park has been a member of the Teamsters since 1981 when he started as a motor truck driver with the City of Chicago. "I've always been a Chicago guy," said Sherlock, who is also a member of Local 700's political committee. "I grew up here, live here, work here, and would love to represent some of the people here." Sherlock explained that priorities for the 19th Ward include hiring more police to ensure the safety of residents and making public schools more accessible to all families. "Phil understands what the people of the 19th Ward need," said John T. Coli, Local 700 Trustee. "More importantly, he understands the necessity of organized labor in everyday life. His family has been involved in labor for over 100 years; that's not something you find with every candidate." Sherlock said the union movement afforded him and his family the opportunity to work, earn a decent wage, raise a family, educate their children and provide an overall sense of security. "As police officers, both my father and grandfather were big on organized labor," Sherlock said. "To them, and to most people I think, it's more than job protection– it's being a part of something that strives to improve the lives of average, hardworking people." Teamsters Local 700 has also endorsed many other candidates for the Chicago Municipal election. Members can download the full list below. |
