March 14, 2011 East Hazel Crest Member Takes the 'Plunge' for Special Olympics Saturday, March 5, was not a warm day. In fact, small patches of snow lingered on lawns and roads, but that didn't stop Teamsters Local 700 member Roger Novak from diving into freezing water to support a cause he believes in. The Polar Plunge, which has taken place at more than a dozen locations in Illinois this year, raises money for the Special Olympics. Participants, who seek donations from organizations and individuals, plunge into icy waters to show their support. "At least the water was open this year," said Novak, who is a Patrol Officer with the East Hazel Crest Police Department. "Last year they had to chop off the ice so there was room for us to dive in." Backed by Local 700, in addition to many other supporters, Novak waded in Lake Manteno in Manteno, Ill. until the water reached his chest. Participants swam several yards out before turning around to swim back. "This event definitely makes a statement," said John T. Coli, Local 700 Trustee. "I don't think many of us want to go swimming in freezing cold water anytime soon, but we can all agree that the Special Olympics is a very worthy cause, and we were happy to support Roger in this unusual fundraiser." The Polar Plunge is part of a larger fundraiser, the Law Enforcement Torch Run, which also raises money for Special Olympics. Several officers from police departments across the state will be participating in the Torch Run in June 2011.
