March 15, 2011 Teamsters Help Push Through Bill That Protects JTDC Counselors & Others A bill that offers additional protection to counselors and other Teamster-represented workers at the Juvenile Temporary Detention Center, Will County Juvenile Detention Center and all other detention centers in Illinois unanimously passed the Illinois Senate Criminal Law Committee on March 9. "This bill passed at a crucial time for our JTDC members," said William P. Logan, Local 700 Assistant Trustee. "With the Chicago Police Department and Cook County Sheriff at odds over who will offer our members protection, this bill acts as a deterrent to violent residents at JTDC." Senate Bill 1754, sponsored by Sen. John Mulroe, classifies the assault of a juvenile detention center counselor as an automatic aggravated assault. It also covers any detention center employees who provide direct and continuous supervision to residents. "This type of protection is already available to police officers, teachers, bus drivers and park district employees," said John T. Coli, Local 700 Trustee. "Providing this security to our members is an obvious and fair measure and we are proud to be behind it." The bill now moves to the Senate floor, where a vote is expected as early as this week.
