March 16, 2011 Cook County Corrections Officer Receives National Recognition Cook County Corrections Officer Joseph Fiorentino has transformed a hobby into an act of philanthropy since 2006. Fiorentino spends many of his weekends teaching self defense skills to groups of children and occasionally adults. "I like the idea of being able to protect yourself," said Fiorentino. "Somebody helped me get started and I wanted to pass that on to help others." Fiorentino has a black belt in martial arts and is a certified defensive tactics instructor. In addition to teaching children, he teaches officers across the country defense tactics. Though he does all his work pro-bono, Fiorentino's accomplishments have not gone unrecognized. In 2008 he received the President's Volunteer Service Award from the Obama Administration. In 2010, Fiorentino was inducted into the Italian American National Hall of Fame and the United States Martial Arts Hall of Fame. He has received nearly 20 awards and recognitions since he began his volunteer work. "Joe's extraordinary efforts are emblematic of what the Teamsters stand for," said John T. Coli, Local 700 Trustee. "He goes above and beyond to improve himself on and off the job, all while helping others change their lives." Fiorentino explained that his interest in martial arts is more than just a hobby. "Martial arts gives me better discipline and more confidence," Fiorentino said. "It makes you a little more prepared, which makes me a better officer and a better Teamster." Fiorentino's next self defense class began Saturday, March 12. The class is geared toward mother and daughters and will take place over four Saturdays. Participants must register for this free event by calling (708) 749-0606 ext. 20.
