Heroic Court Service Deputies to be Honored at Law Enforcement Breakfast
Cook County Court Service Deputies Edward Flory and David Soto will be honored for their bravery with a plaque and gift at the Teamsters Local 700-sponsored breakfast following the St. Jude Police Memorial March on May 1.
Flory and Soto successfully rescued several people from a burning building at 115 E. 111th St. in mid January.
"When we saw the flames coming out of the windows, we didn't think there would be enough time to wait for the fire department," said Soto. "There was a lot of smoke and there were flames roaring out. We just went on reaction."
That reaction saved the lives of four people living in the building. When they arrived at the scene, tenants of the building who had already made it outside told the deputies people were still trapped inside.
"We just did it on instinct," said Flory. "We figured people might need help and we were right there in front of the building. We were the closest ones to giving them help."
Flory, who suffers from asthma, said his condition was slightly irritated after the rescue. Soto pinched a nerve in his back, but both are back at work and doing fine.
