June 15, 2011 Local 700 Monitors Wage Rates of Subcontractors In early June, several Local 700 business agents conducted area standards check at over a dozen work sites in the City of Chicago. These checks are done to assure that subcontractors given contracts are paying their employees the prevailing wage rate and benefits required by the City of Chicago. "These important standard checks ensure our members are being given a fair shot at the work distributed by the City of Chicago," said John T. Coli, Local 700 Trustee. "Without these checks, it would be much easier for favoritism to play a part in who gets what job." Local 700 representatives found at least one subcontractor on the south side of Chicago who was paying substandard wages. These random area standard checks will continue throughout the summer construction season. Once the checks are completed, Local 700 representatives present a full report to Coli and Local 700 Assistant Trustees William P. Local and Becky Strzechowski. |
