August 2, 2011 Gov. Pat Quinn Signs Bill That Protects Local 700 Members Thanks to the foresight of Local 700 representatives and the hard work of Joint Council 25 lobbyists, Teamster members working at Cook and Will County Juvenile Detention Centers will now enjoy extra protection on the job. “This is a perfect example of one member coming forward with a solution to a serious problem and turning that into something that will ultimately help thousands of people across the state,” said John T. Coli, Local 700 Trustee. Public Act 097-0225, previously referred to as SB 1754, offers additional protection to counselors and other Teamster-represented workers at the Juvenile Temporary Detention Center, Will County Juvenile Detention Center and all other detention centers in Illinois. “This bill is moving forward at a crucial time for our JTDC members,” said Logan. “With the Chicago Police Department and Cook County Sheriff at odds over who will offer our members protection, this bill acts as a deterrent to violent residents at JTDC.” Sponsored by Sen. John Mulroe, the public act classifies the assault of a juvenile detention center counselor as an automatic aggravated assault. It also covers any detention center employees who provide direct and continuous supervision to residents. “This type of protection is already available to police officers, teachers, bus drivers and park district employees,” said Coli. “Providing this security to our members is an obvious and fair measure and we are proud to be behind it.” |
