Mass Casualty Disaster Drill Prepares Members for Worst Teamsters Local 700 members at O’Hare Airport are more prepared than ever for disasters at the airport, thanks to their recent Mass Casualty Disaster Drill. Every four years, employees at both airports coordinate with fire departments and police departments to organize simulated plane crash. This exercise is designed to make sure facilities and employees are equipped are ready to respond should an actual crash occur. For Local 700 Motor Truck Drivers, response time and being focused is crucial. “MTD drivers were extremely vital to this situation,” said John LoCelso, Local 700 member and foreman in charge in the dispatch office, said. “They performed over and above the call of duty.” Hundreds of workers from the airports and local fire and police departments gathered at O’Hare on Sept. 22 to participate. Actors were even brought in, complete with make up to show fake wounds, to simulate injured passengers. LoCelso worked with other Local 700 members Hector Tellado and Nick LaMonica as MTD Foremen to organize members and make sure they got to the crash site in an orderly and helpful way. “Our members at O’Hare airport are an integral part of a system designed to save lives,” said John T. Coli, Local 700 Trustee. “All too often we are reminded of the terror a few people can bring to the world. Training sessions like this bring all travelers peace of mind.” |
