October 4, 2011 Local 700 Member Saves Four in Multiple-House Fire Summit Firefighter Paramedic Michael Wodarczyk knows procedure and follows it by the book. He knows firefighters work in teams, but when his Assistant Chief asked him to enter a burning home to save a family, he didn’t hesitate. “I was really just doing my job,” said Wodarczyk. As Wodarczyk and several other firefighters pulled up to the scene, they could immediately see the main house that was on fire. Many firefighters focused on putting that fire out, while other worked on the houses on either side, which were also on fire. That was when Wodarczyk was told an entire family was still inside one of the burning houses. “I had to force entry on two doors to get in,” said Wodarczyk. “I found a family– mom, dad and two kids. They were sound asleep.” Wodarczyk woke the family up and they all walked out safely. He was then able to continue putting out the fire. “Many of our members risk their lives everyday to make sure the rest of us can live safely,” said John T. Coli, Local 700 Trustee. “We can all sleep sounder knowing that people like Michael are taking care of us.” Wodarczyk, who suffered a minor concussion as a result of falling debris, was back to work in a few days with some advice: get a smoke detector. “It’s a very inexpensive item to purchase and install that can help save you and your family.” |
