October 28, 2011 Safety Issues Discussed as Result of Member Death Teamsters Local 700 representatives met with Hanover Park Officials on Sept. 21 to discuss a recent on-the-job member death and other safety issues. The Illinois Department of Labor is currently investigating the untimely death of Edward Boekenhauer, who was killed in a work-related accident in May. While the Village and Local 700 both await the outcome of this investigation and the coroner’s report, preliminary changes are already being made. “Local 700 representatives took time to question Village officials about safety standards and training,” said Becky Strzechowski, Local 700 Assistant Trustee. “We appreciate the receptiveness of the Village and are anticipating a safer work environment in the future.” The preliminary changes include formalizing a system of training, posting caution notices on equipment, better documentation to show that staff has received training and making modifications to current equipment. A Local 700 union steward will now sit on the Hanover Park safety committee, which meets on the second Thursday of each month. The steward will submit minutes to the union for review and suggestions for improvement. “The best thing we can all do moving forward is become more involved in the day-to-day safety operations,” said John T. Coli, Local 700 Trustee. “Local 700 representatives and stewards are more than eager to do this, and the Village has been cooperative.” The Village has also made available counseling and will continue to at the request of members. |
