December 15, 2011 Hundreds of Cook County Sheriff’s Deputies to Receive Compensatory Time Teamsters Local 700 secured a huge arbitration win for Cook County Sheriff’s Deputies on Dec. 9, with hundreds of members to receive 8 to 10 hours of compensatory time, depending on their shift. This grievance began in 2011 as a result of the year’s largest blizzard. It was decided that, because of the large amount of snow that made it difficult to travel, Sheriff’s Deputies would not have to report. Not all members were contacted with this information, however, and many reported to work on time. The members who did not work were forced to use benefit time in order to be compensated or use a zero payday if no benefit time was available. “This is just another example of Cook County’s great inability to communicate with its employees,” said William P. Logan, Local 700 President-Elect. “Our members are entitled to be compensated for the time they worked, regardless of whether or not the County intended them to report. The arbitration win is huge for us.” According to the Arbitrator’s award, Deputies affected by this issue will be required to execute an affidavit to recoup their lost time. Additional details regarding the affidavit will be forthcoming. |
