ILRB Issues Complaint Against Cook County Sheriff

The Illinois Labor Relations Board issued a complaint against Cook County and the Cook County Sheriff after Teamsters Local 700 filed an unfair labor practice claiming retaliation against Court Service Deputies who filed grievances protesting shift changes resulting in understaffing in street units.

The case involves as many as 14 Court Service Deputies who were retaliated against after filing a grievance over shift changes that affected their co-workers.

The original grievance stated that by transferring members from the second shift to the third, the Sheriff was reducing the second shift staff levels to dangerous levels. However, after the grievance was filed, the Sheriff expanded the shift change list to include Deputies who had not been subject to transfer but who had signed onto the grievance.

“We’re on a fact-finding mission here,” said William P. Logan, Local 700 Assistant Trustee. “We want to know what motivation the Sheriff had to transfer these individuals to another shift and why he would want to create a situation that is dangerous for our members.”

The complaint was issued on Nov. 17. The matter is pending full hearing before the ILRB.
