Hoffman Estates Members Donate Time, Goods to Displaced Family

After hearing that a Hoffman Estates family of eight was displaced because of a home fire in January 2011, Hoffman Estates Public Works employee and Local 700 member Jay Evans knew there was something he could do.

“When he heard about this family, he really got stuff going and got everyone together to gather donations,” said Jim Finn, also a Local 700 member and Hoffman Estates Public Works employee. “They really have nothing. They need everything.”

After a fire destroyed their home and possessions early this year, Rodriguez family used their insurance-issued money to pay for a contractor. After taking their money, the contractor skipped town, leaving the family with nothing.

“This is a great example of how unions not only benefit the workforce, but people in general,” said Local 700 President William P. Logan. “The Teamsters have created such a strong environment of unity and giving that our members are always looking to help others, and not necessarily just other Teamsters.”

Logan, along with Business Agent Gus Horemis and many other Local 700 members, donated clothes, household goods and money to help the family get back on their feet. Other people across the Village are also offering aid, including a contractor who is donating his services to get the family back home.

“I’m proud of the initiative our members took to help this family,” said Logan. “They truly embrace the Teamster spirit.”
