| Local 700 Responds To Illinois 'Safe-T Act' |
|
|
(01/01/2023)
Teamsters Local 700 is keeping our promise to provide consistent communication regarding the implementation of the Pretrial Fairness Act, or Safe-T Act.
We want to communicate the following update:
-
The PFA will NOT go into effect anywhere in the state, pending the outcome of the AG's appeal.
-
In an uncharacteristically fast move by the Illinois Supreme Court, it found that as the 25th Judicial Circuit found the Act to be unconstitutional. Therefore, the Act will be stayed during the pendency of the appeal.
Whether this will take weeks or months is unknown at this time. However, the Court has ordered that it proceed in an expedited manner.
See attached order.
Earlier this week, a trial court judge in the Twenty-First Judicial Circuit, Kankakee County, found that certain parts of the so-called SAFE-T Act are unconstitutional. While it is presumed that an appeal will be made to the Illinois Supreme Court, the Nineteenth Judicial Circuit Court will begin following the SAFE-T Act on Sunday, January 1, 2023.
