For more than a year, Teamsters Local 700 committed itself to listening to Cook County Court Service Deputies, understanding their concerns, and building a campaign rooted in respect for the vital work they do every day throughout the Sheriff’s Office. That commitment paid off this month when deputies voted to change their union representation from the Fraternal Order of Police to Teamsters Local 700.
From the beginning, this campaign was about engagement and respect. Local 700 organizers and leaders spent months meeting deputies where they work, having one on one conversations, and answering hard questions about what real representation looks like. Deputies spoke candidly about workload, staffing, safety, discipline, and the need for a union that would be present, responsive, and relentless in advocating on their behalf.
Local 700 made clear that those concerns would not just be heard, but acted on.
“This victory belongs to the Court Service Deputies,” said Local 700 President Ramon Williams. “They took the time to get informed, they asked tough questions, and they made a democratic decision about who they believe will fight hardest for them at the bargaining table and on the job. We are honored by their trust and eager to get to work.”
Throughout the year-long campaign, Local 700 emphasized its track record representing public sector workers across Cook County and the region. Deputies learned about the union’s experience negotiating strong contracts, enforcing them through aggressive grievance representation, and mobilizing members to win real improvements like the historic “me-too” raises. Just as importantly, they saw a union culture focused on transparency, accessibility, and member driven priorities.
“This campaign was a full team effort from Local 700, and one built on relationships,” said Local 700 Vice President Anthony McGee. “We did not parachute in at the last minute. Our team showed up consistently, we listened, and we demonstrated what it means to be a fighting union. The deputies made this change because they want a union that stands shoulder to shoulder with them every day.”
With the election now decided, Local 700 is focused on a smooth transition and immediate engagement with its newest members. The union will begin meeting with deputies to set bargaining priorities, address pressing workplace issues, and ensure that every member knows how to access representation and support.
This victory reflects a growing belief among working people that strong, responsive unions matter. Cook County Court Service Deputies have made their choice, and Teamsters Local 700 is proud to stand with them as their new voice on the job.
